INSTRUMENTS OF THE ORCHESTRA

STRINGS - Sound on a string instrument is produced by pulling a bow made of wood and horsehair across the string or by plucking a string with the fingers.
String instruments include: violin, viola, cello, bass and harp

WOODWINDS - Sound is produced by blowing into the instrument that causes a wooden reed to vibrate. The piccolo and flute produce their sound by blowing across a hole, similar to blowing across the top of a soda bottle.
Woodwind instruments include: piccolo, flute, oboe, english horn, clarinet, bass clarinet, bassoon and contra bassoon

BRASS - Sound is produced by buzzing the lips in a mouthpiece.
Brass instruments include: trumpet, french horn, trombone and tuba

PERCUSSION - Sound is produced by striking the instrument.
Non-pitched percussion instruments include: snare drum, bass drum, cymbals, tambourine and triangle
Pitched percussion instruments include: timpani, xylophone, marimba, bells, chimes and piano
