Beethoven and Mozart

Beethoven’s Eroica

Season: 2020-2021

Saturday, March 6 at 7:30 pm
Sunday, March 7 at 2:30 pm
Hemmens Cultural Center, Elgin, IL

Sorry, tickets to this experience are no longer available.

Beethoven originally dedicated his third symphony to Napoleon, but upon hearing that the revolutionary hero had declared himself Emperor of France, he flew into a rage and scratched the dedication from the title page. Whether dedicated to Napoleon or not, the soaring melodies and triumphant horn calls certainly justifies the symphony’s new subtitle “Eroica,” meaning “Heroic.”

SAFETY PROTOCOLS The safety of our patrons, musicians and staff has been and will be our top priority. ESO does not own its own performance space, so we will be coordinating with each rental facility regarding cleaning and sanitizing practices and the proper amount of fresh and recycled airflow in their ventilation systems. We continue to monitor best practices from reputable sources on a daily basis. Every patron attending an ESO event during the pandemic will be notified 10-14 days prior to each event date via email, phone and/or mail of safety protocols for their upcoming event. Safety protocols will be based on the current Restore Illinois Phase and CDC guidelines at that time and may or may not include temperature checks, health screening questions, mandatory wearing of face covering, socially distanced seating, timed arrival, restroom or concession breaks by seating area and self-parking (as examples). We will adhere to the policies mandated by local and state health officials as they develop. If at any time during the pandemic, you do not feel comfortable attending a concert due to safety protocols or for personal reasons, you may contact the ESO Box Office to donate your ticket value, ask for an ESO account credit or refund.

At this time, no changes have been made to the ESO concerts scheduled from January through May 2021. The ESO staff will continue to monitor the pandemic throughout the fall. Physical tickets for the 2021 concerts will not be mailed out in August 2020 as originally planned. Ticket holders for the 2021 concerts will be notified of any schedule changes and/or safety protocols by November 2020. If no changes need to be made to the spring 2021 concert schedule, then physical tickets and donor benefits will be mailed shortly after our November 2020 announcement.

Tania Miller

Canadian Conductor Tania Miller has distinguished herself as a dynamic interpreter, musician and innovator on the podium and off. Returning this season to the podium of the Chicago Symphony as well as the orchestras of the Toronto Symphony, Calgary Philharmonic and Orchestra Métropolitain de Montreal, Miller has appeared as a guest conductor in Canada, the United States and Europe with such orchestras as the Bern Symphony Orchestra, NFM Wrocław Philharmonic, Seattle Symphony, Oregon Symphony, National Arts Centre Orchestra (Ottawa), Vancouver Symphony, Louisiana Philharmonic, Naples Philharmonic, Rhode Island Philharmonic, National Repertory Orchestra, and Hartford Symphony among others.

In 14 years as Music Director of the Victoria Symphony in Canada, Tania Miller gained national acclaim for her passion and commitment to the orchestra and community. She was the driving force behind new growth, innovation and quality for the Victoria Symphony, and gained a national reputation as a highly effective advocate and communicator for the arts. As curator, she distinguished herself as a visionary leader and innovator.

Acknowledged for the impact and success of her tenure, she was recently bestowed with the title Music Director Emerita of the Victoria Symphony. Recipient of the 2017 Friends of Canadian Music award from the Canadian League of Composers and Canadian Music Centre for her acclaimed commitment to contemporary music in Canada, Tania Miller has been a story about the impact of commitment and dedication to an orchestra and to the future of orchestral music through creative innovation and vision.

On the podium, Maestra Miller projects authority, dynamism and sheer love of the experience of making music. As one critic put it, she delivers “a calm intensity . . . expressive, colorful and full of life . . . her experience and charisma are audible”. Others call her performances “technically immaculate, vivid and stirring”.

In 2015, Miller received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Royal Roads University in recognition of her exemplary work as a leader and for her extraordinary artistic achievements in the community. In addition, she was a recipient of the 2016 Paul Harris Award from the Rotary Foundation for distinguished musical excellence and leadership. Canada’s Royal Conservatory of Music bestowed her with an Honorary Diploma in 2015 for her impact on music in Canada.

Maestra Miller’s early passion was opera; she conducted numerous productions for Michigan Opera Works in Ann Arbor (where she served as Artistic Director) and Opera McGill in Montréal. She obtained her doctoral and master’s degrees in conducting from the University of Michigan.
