Andrew Grams, conductor
The ESO musicians work hard at rehearsals throughout the weeks to prepare for concerts, and we invite you to join us for this free and open to the public dress rehearsal! You may sit up close to the stage and hear the dialogue between the conductor and musicians, and experience the process of making music! The musicians will rehearse for the upcoming May 4-5 concerts conducted by ESO Music Director Andrew Grams that feature two composers-Gustav Mahler and Aaron Copland. Two final symphonies-one heartbreaking, one hopeful. Mahler wrote his Adagio from Symphony No. 10 when he was terminally ill and dealing with his wife’s infidelity. Copland’s last symphony, No. 3, has been called by critics “an American monument” and “the greatest American Symphony ever written.” Symphony No. 3 embodies Copland’s quintessential American sound, expressing the spirit of hope and promise for the future. A perfect match for the ineffable “esprit” of the Elgin Symphony Orchestra and the charismatic Andrew Hilary Grams.
