Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 1
The Elgin Symphony Orchestra (ESO), unprecedented four-time winner of Illinois Professional Orchestra of the Year, opens its 2017-18 season with works by the beloved Russian composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky. The program, led by Music Director Andrew Grams, features the famous Piano Concerto No. 1, with its instantly recognizable opening theme. A sample of the piece is used in Pink Martini’s song Splendor in the Grass and it’s also featured in the Steven King movie Misery. Ukraine-born pianist, Dinara Klinton, will play the masterwork. “She is a real virtuoso, a born pianist, a very natural player,” notes Sir András Schiff. ESO Music Director Andrew Grams heard her perform at the 2016 Cleveland International Piano Competition and immediately booked her for these ESO opening performances. The program also holds the ESO premiere of Tchaikovsky’s Suite No. 3, which was declared “electrifying” at its first performance in Saint Petersburg, Russia on January 24, 1885.

Amy Weishaar, ESO Board: I can’t wait for the exciting season opening of my favorite orchestra – the ESO! Tchaikovsky is one of my top composers because of the lush sound of his violins and the emotion that courses through his music.
