All-Russian Program
Shostakovich – Festive Overture
Tchaikovsky – Violin Concerto
Rachmaninoff – Symphonic Dances
The ESO’s opening concerts set the tone by highlighting Russian composers, who will be featured throughout the season. The program fittingly begins the gala occasion with Shostakovich’s Festive Overture, an exuberant work he wrote in three days at the request of the conductor of the Bolshoi Theatre Orchestra. The concerts also feature Tchaikovsky’s virtuosic Violin Concerto, once declared “unplayable,” performed by guest violinist Simone Porter, and Rachmaninoff’s final composition, Symphonic Dances, unique in its use of alto saxophone as a solo instrument.
