NOTEworthy Concert Facts
In Slavic folklore, The Firebird is a magical creature from a distant land that brings both blessings and doom to its captor. Igor Stravinsky wrote the music for this ballet, which was an instant success and marked the beginning of his celebrity.
Frederick Chopin was a musical prodigy who died at a young age. His famous Grande Valse Brillante is featured in movies and in cartoons like Tom and Jerry’s The Flying Cat.
Clair du Lune by Claude Debussy has been called French Impressionism in music. A bridge between the Romantic era and 20th century music, when asked what harmony rules he followed, the innovative Debussy replied, “Whatever I please.”
Cello Concerto’s “classical lyricism and melody combine fluidly with blues, jazz elements, and techno rhythms that come straight from the 21st-century electronic club scene.”* The concerto was composed in 2014 by Mason Bates, who writes symphonic music and is a DJ of electronic dance music.
Guest Artist Joshua Roman has earned an international reputation for his wide-ranging repertoire & commitment to communicating the essence of music in visionary ways.
