For more than three decades, the legacy of American Voices has demonstrated the transformative power of music and the arts to connect people across cultures, borders, and histories. Today, that mission continues through the Elgin Symphony Orchestra Cultural Diplomacy Initiative — a new platform dedicated to advancing international cultural exchange, artistic collaboration, education, and people-to-people engagement (between Elgin’s immigrant communities and their home countries) through the performing arts.
Rooted in the belief that culture builds bridges where politics often cannot, the Initiative carries forward the pioneering work begun by American Voices in 1993. Through concerts, residencies, workshops, youth academies, artist exchanges, and community engagement programs, we seek to foster mutual understanding, creativity, and human connection in communities around the world. Continuing a Legacy of Cultural Diplomacy
American Voices became one of the United States’ most respected cultural diplomacy organizations, implementing programs in more than 160 nations and partnering with the U.S. Department of State on major international arts initiatives including American Music Abroad and Arts Envoy programs. Its work brought together musicians, dancers, actors, educators, and youth from diverse backgrounds in nations emerging from conflict, transition, and isolation. (American Voices)

Building on the orchestra’s commitment to artistic excellence and community engagement, the Initiative expands the role of the symphony orchestra as a force for dialogue, education, and international understanding.
